Trial by Jury

An operatic trial in a real courtroom

Gilbert and Sullivan's battle of the sexes is a community opera, with Minima professionals in the main roles and members of the local community as chorus and in small roles. Angelina sues her ex for breach of promise. It's a trial by jury in an English court, but is this jury truly impartial? And what about the judge? And does the Usher manage to keep control as behaviour of the members of the public gets somewhat out of hand? Trial is part of a double bill with Divas!, our take on Mozart's The Impresario.

Oakham Castle was built in the late 12th century, but by the early 16th century many of the buildings were in ruins. The Great Hall, however, continued in use as a courtroom; Assize Courts were held there until 1970 and occasional Crown Courts and Coroner's Inquests take place to the present day. It is therefore highly appropriate that "Trial by Jury" should take place there with jury from the local community
